Older Dominion Partnership

The Older Dominion Partnership (ODP) is a non-profit initiative by Virginia business, government, founda- tions, and non-profits to help Virginia prepare for the age wave -- the doubling of the Common- wealth's 65+ year old population from ~900,000 today to over ~1.8 million by 2030. The ODP serves as an inspiration, catalyst, and independent platform for networking, collaborating and planning.

Engaging Boomers

The issue of civic engagement among Baby Boomers was introduced to the Richmond region March 11 when Tom Silvestri, Older Dominion Partnership board chair and publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, hosted a "Public Square" discussion at the newspaper building on March 11.

A panel and audience conversed on how to make Richmond a top five community nationally for civic engagement. John Martin, President & CEO of SIR Research, also presented some of the data from an ODP-sponsored survey on volunteerism in the Richmond region.

Encouraging greater civic participation by Baby Boomers is of central concern to the ODP as Virginia braces for a doubling of the over-65 population and simultaneous shrinkage of trained caregivers in the Generation X that follows. A March 26 event, "Symposium on Boomer Engagement: The Future Wave of Volunteerism," will discuss strategies for getting Boomers involved. A break-out session, "Boomers Serving Seniors," will focus on models and strategies for engaging Boomers to work with older adults in long-term care facilities, hospice and adult day care centers.

Broken Trust: Elders, Families and Finances
ODP member, Dr. Karen Roberto, teamed up with the Virginia Tech Center for Gerontology and MetLife to study the problem of elder abuse. One of the conclusions: "The increased aging of the population, social changes, and technology advances will lead to a dramatic increase in the opportunity for a growing level of elder financial abuse."
